CREDIT: 5 - Spanish credits per sem.

PREREQUISITE: Enrollment is for students learning Spanish as a second language. Students with prior knowledge of Spanish through home or community use are expected to enroll in the Spanish for Spanish speakers’ classes.

A-G Pathway: E - Language other than English

OTHER INFO: A one-year elective course that may not be entered at the semester. Meets KHSD graduation requirements. Meets CSU/UC A-G entrance requirements.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Spanish 1 is designed for students who are learning the language. This class covers all modes of communication as defined by the CA World Language Standards: INTERPRETIVE LISTENING where students can recognize some familiar words & phrases in Spanish. INTERPRETIVE READING where students recognize some familiar words & phrases when reading in Spanish. INTERPERSONAL SPEAKING where students ask & answer questions on very familiar topics using memorized/practiced words & phrases in Spanish. PRESENTATIONAL WRITING - where students can write lists and present information about themselves and familiar topics using memorized/practiced words & phrases. This course helps students develop competency in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with primary emphasis on oral communication and comprehension. Students are exposed to other cultures through various activities that help students to focus on cultural similarities as well as differences. In this course a variety of communicative, multimedia, audio and video techniques provide students with opportunities to learn the language in many exciting and interesting real-life contexts. Students are expected to participate in a variety of ways: such as listening, speaking, and presenting designed to aid in pronunciation and fluency. Students will also collaborate by engaging in partner and group work intended to be interactive, such as games and role playing.
