COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the fundamentals of graphic design, focusing primarily on Adobe Illustrator with support from related Adobe applications. Students learn essential design principles and techniques needed to create logos, apparel graphics, and marketing materials, laying the foundation for careers in the apparel, marketing, and promotional product industries. Through hands-on projects, students will develop technical skills in vector design, typography, and composition while exploring industry’s best practices. In addition to digital design, students will gain firsthand experience with the design-to-print process by working with in-classroom printing equipment. They will be introduced to basic production methods, understanding how digital artwork translates into physical products such as screen-printed apparel, heat transfers, and promotional merchandise. All skills and content covered in this introductory course are designed to prepare students for Graphic Arts 2, where they will take on greater responsibilities in operating & managing the active student print shop on campus.
